MBA Research Consortium of States
Membership Benefits, 2018-19
Serving all Business Administration educators and students of
Entrepreneurship & Finance & Management/Administration & Marketing

MBA Research is an association (consortium) of states. Membership is statewide and provides benefits to all Career-Tech (CTE) educators in all states and many nations. Individual school or teacher memberships are not available.

Statewide member benefits serve all schools in a given state and include research, service, and resources for both the state and for individual schools, as outlined below.

There are four levels of membership available to states: Basic, Standard, Full, and Enhanced. Annual membership contributions are based on the membership level and the state’s total population.

Many benefits are accessed via the State’s Connection 2.0 Resource Portal and require individual users to establish an online account with password. Registration for the new site is here and the State’s Connection portal is located at https://mbastatesconnection.mbaresearch.org/

Basic Membership

  • Business Engagement: Tools and activities to encourage local business community involvement in multiple aspects of the program, including standards validation, curriculum oversite, student organization and classroom participation, and advocacy.  Specific benefits include:
    • Action Briefs: Short summaries of trends and issues recognized by the business community.  Most are derived from “futuring” panel focus groups with senior executives.  Each includes a brief call to action in terms of implications for educators and implications for the business community.  Published 6 – 10 times annually.
    • Executive Advisory Network (ExecNet):  Distance-based network of business professionals who provide regular input via online surveys and distance-based discussions.  This database provides additional, focused access to participating practitioners for various state-based activities such as CTSO judges, speakers’ bureau, and advisory committees.  Staff will work directly with you to recruit membership in the Executive Advisory Network AND help you access the Network for a variety of state needs, including advocacy activities.  Analytics of state participation are provided to states on a regular basis.
    • State/Local Business Badges:  A series of digital badges (micro-credentials) that recognize individual contributions from business professionals.  Badging criteria will consist of engagement activities that can occur at the local, state, or national level (e.g. local/state advisory committee contributions, participation in state/national focus groups, state curriculum and assessment committees, national standards input, work-based-learning, job placement, CTSO involvement).  Badges to be awarded by MBA Research.
    • Business Coalition Year 1: 50% discount.  Our Industry Liaison staff will work directly with you to connect with associations and organizations throughout your state and work with them to engage their members in supporting and advocating activities statewide. We'll work with you to identify one or more teachers to act as a liaison to specific associations and provide appropriate collateral materials and continuing communications to encourage active engagement of the association and its membership.  (FY19 non-member cost:  $10,000, plus travel as required for initial recruiting and organizational meeting; $5,000/year for continuing support, depending on specific needs.)
    • Business Coalition Year 2+: 50% discount for continuing support.
    • Validation Focus Group:   50% discount. Our R&D team will conduct one or more on-site focus groups to validate key standards as determined jointly with you. As part of the process, we’ll work with you to populate the focus group and prepare a summary report of our findings for your use as appropriate.
    • Executive-Level “Futuring” Panel: 50% discount.  Our R&D team will work with you to identify, recruit, and empanel one or more on-site "futuring panels" made up of senior-level executives in your state.  Staff will facilitate the focus group and provide a post-meeting report suitable for sharing with senior department management.
    • Entrepreneurship Focus Group: 50% discount.  Our R&D team will work with you to empanel and conduct one or more on-site validation panels made up of entrepreneurs and small business owners in your state. Working together, we'll validate selected state standards and work to encourage advocacy for business and marketing education.
  • Standards:  The national, business-validated standards, sponsored by the MBA Business Coalition for Education network of state coalitions, are intended to be the basis for all program and curriculum design to support preparation of students for future careers (typically via college) in myriad specialized careers. MBA Research maintains a continuing research initiative to ensure that published standards and supporting performance indicators accurately reflect what established business practitioners do and what they need to know in order to do so.  NOTE: The national business administration standards do not suggest what should be taught in any given class or program.  Rather, they simply describe critical tasks of incumbent workers and the requisite knowledge base.  The master list of standards and indicators is published for free access to all.  Specific member benefits include:
    • Standards.MBAResearch.org: Specialized website offers a layperson overview of the national standards and performance indicators.  Intended for use with the business community, parents, counselors, and administrators, it is free of the jargon and superfluous detail provided by other tools.  The site may also be useful as a first-time orientation for new business administration teachers.
    • State Crosswalks:  30% Discount.  We'll work with you and a teacher team (optional) to crosswalk nationally validated standards with your state standards and provide a detailed gap analysis to document differences.  (Non-member pricing:  $750/set (e.g. course of program based on existing state structure).
  • Curriculum:  What career professionals do and know is far broader and detailed than what can be taught in any given secondary or postsecondary class.  Therefore, the business-validated standards and performance indicators are step one in building useable curricula.  Translating standards to curricula requires a number of informed decisions addressing questions such as focus (clusters, pathways, jobs, context), and levels of rigor, scope, and sequence.  Membership benefits include both curriculum models and tools for local curriculum work:
    • MBA Curriculum Builder: Web-based database that allows easy and fast manipulation of the national Business Administration standards. The system supports a variety of queries that can be used to build state standards or to develop courses or programs of study based on the national standards.  The database allows teachers to access activities, resources, sample test items, rubrics and scenarios, and other resources to support quality curriculum design.  NOTE:  Multiple course models and specialized lists (e.g. for competitive event preparation) can be accessed via MBA Curriculum Builder.
    • Program-of-Study Kits: Comprehensive Program-of-Study (POS) models include detailed recommendations for a logical sequence of courses for grades 9 through a college BA degree. Models support 2, 3, and 4-year HS programs and offer various levels of rigor based on MBA Curriculum Planning Levels and other data.  Each model POS is the basis for corresponding digital badges and provide a strong foundation of preparation for the A*S*K Institute certifications.
    • Course Guides:  Course Guides offer a comprehensive solution for each of the courses recommended in a Program of Study. Each guide includes specific tools and recommendations for the instructor, including a detailed list of learning expectations. NOTE: Guides are not instructional materials, but are intended for course planning and design. Each Guide includes sample test items that can be used to build exams. Guides are revised and updated regularly, and not less than once each five years.  For a complete list of available Guides, search "curriculum" in the online store.
  • Instructional Support:  The most comprehensive instructional support is provided via the online MBA Learning Center a subscription-based learning management system that houses a library of more than 300 modules.  All schools in member states receive a 30% discount on both the base subscription (for up to five teachers), as well as for individual students.  In addition to the Learning Center, membership benefits include:
    • Ethics Case Studies:  Collection of “Gray Zone” mini-cases catalogued by instructional area, with two or three new cases added each month.  Each is real-world oriented and relevant to either day-to-day work challenges or to more strategic, management-oriented decision-making.  Cases are intended to stimulate conversation and to engage students in thoughtful analysis.  Although a discussion guide is provided, there is seldom a “correct” answer.
    • Vetted WWW Bookmarks:  As our researchers and writers search the web, they frequently find sites of particular interest that can add real value to the local classroom. We bookmark these sites and post them in State's Connection. All teachers in member states are then just a click away from some of the best that the web has to offer.
    • Projects to Support PBL: Challenging, authentic projects that provide meaningful project-based learning experiences within the framework of the national business administration standards.
    • Project Management Tools: Tools and templates for initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing a project. Two versions are available: one for teachers and students with little or no knowledge of project management, and a second designed for teachers and students with more experience in managing projects of all sizes.
  • Proof of Learning:  Schools in member states receive a 30% discount on a wide array of online exams, including business-sponsored certifications.  All are supported with a digital badging program included at no additional cost in member states.  Additional proof-of-learning member benefits include:
    • Rubrics and Scenarios: Detailed rubrics and scenarios that can be used in a number of different classes. They also offer a great tool for helping students prepare for competitive events in all three relevant student organizations.
  • Professional Development (PD):  PD is offered on a wide array of relevant topics and via various media/methods.  Topics range from best-practice curriculum and pedagogy, to specific how-to training in the use of MBA Research tools.  Member benefits include:
    • Monday Morning Update (MMU):  Our MMU is designed to keep all member-state program leaders in the loop. In short, we share what we know that may be relevant to all aspects of your business/marketing programs. MMU is designed for state program leaders and is not appropriate for local teachers and administrators.
    • Annual Workshop Package: Access to a series of seminars and workshop packages designed to be delivered by state program leaders and expert business/marketing teachers.  Revised annually, packages focus on helping local teachers get maximum value from your MBA Research state membership. Additional packages will help guide teachers through the national accreditation criteria (best practice for exemplary programs).
    • Perspectives Newsletter - This email-based newsletter is targeted at local business and marketing teachers. Issued ad hoc (approximately 40 per year), we provide a mix of news and professional development, along with ready-to-use activities such as selected ethics case studies and other relevant current events materials.
    • Leadership Forum Support:  Travel support = 15% of total membership fees over the most recent three years, including current year, less prior reimbursements.  This is an in-depth forum designed to give individual member states direct input into the MBA Research program of work and to provide an in-depth discussion into the nature of our work and the growth and development of the profession. Part advisory committee agenda and part training and professional development, participants work with our staff and national leaders to be certain we're all moving in the same direction.
    • Conclave Presenter Collateral: Collection of handouts, PowerPoint slide decks, and other collateral materials from the current and prior years’ presenters.
    • PD Documentation:  Database of participation in selected professional development activities. Reports are available free to all teachers in member states to help support local claims for continuing education and to document participation for various college credit opportunities.
    • Conclave Registration: 25% discount.  Annual professional development conference for all business administration educators.  Anticipated non-member registration fee: $529.
  • Program Development
    • Marketing Tools: Designed to build enrollment, schools will have access to a variety of tools, including basic marketing communications plan, surveys for local use, posters and collateral material masters.
    • Teacher Advisory Network (HS): Put two of your teachers on the MBA Research team. Our national teacher advisory network is designed to help ensure that we are meeting teacher needs with substantive, realistic, doable products and services. Each Network Member receives free access to MBA Research curriculum and instructional tools and 100% registration fee waiver for Conclave.  NOTE: The second Network Member must be primarily focused on a different career area and alternate CTSO than the first participant.  For example: one member focused on finance and serving as a BPA or FBLA adviser and the second focused on marketing and serving as a DECA advisor.  For continuing membership, Network Members must remain actively engaged throughout their three-year appointments.  (ALSO, see additional Network travel benefit at full and enhanced membership levels.)
    • College Advisory Network: Engage TWO of your postsecondary (two- or four-year college) business administration faculty.  The College Network is designed to help develop better curriculum articulation with secondary programs and to support the implementation of the national standards through appropriate curricula, instructional tools, and proof-of-learning.  Network members receive full access to all appropriate tools and materials.  Nominations open to faculty whose primary responsibility is teaching or administration of business administration core courses (e.g. entrepreneurship, finance/accounting, management, and marketing).
    • Exemplary Program Accreditation: 100% fee waiver for one demonstration site, includes all application and other fees associated with earning and maintaining accreditation.  Includes optional training and prep workshops registration fees.
    • MBA High School of Business™: 20% discount on license fee for an unlimited number of school sites.
  • Policy/Governance:
    • Vote: The MBA Research program of work is determined by your Board of Trustees with input from the full Consortium. All member states are entitled to a voting representative (state liaison) who is appointed by the state's CTE Director. Voting representatives are eligible to serve on the Board of Trustees after serving the required time as the official state liaison.
    • Annual Meeting (Registration):  Registration fee waiver.  Each member state's official liaison is invited and expected to participate in an annual meeting(s) typically held in conjunction with Conclave. The meeting is a mix of Consortium business and professional development for state-level leadership. Programming is a mix of "open" and "private" sessions over the entire Conclave conference.
    • Annual Meeting Travel Support - Travel is fully underwritten for each member state's official representative (state liaison) to participate in the annual meeting.  Reimbursement of expenses is per Board policy and subject to revision at any time.  In general, reimbursement is prorated based on participation in the official meeting (dates and times vary from year to year) and include: least-cost airfare, conference hotel, per diem and incidentals per MBA Research travel policy.
  • Additional Support:
    • Member Discounts:  All public schools in member states receive significant price discounts on most products and services. With minor exceptions, discounts on MBA Research products are 30%.  In addition, members receive a 5% - 10% discount off listed prices on resale products supplied by various other vendors.
    • State’s ConnectionState-centric postings to this password-protected, state-specific website designed to share a wide variety of materials, many of which are identified elsewhere in this member benefits list. All teachers in a member state have direct access to this service and state program leaders may use the site to add other relevant materials (subject to approval based on MBA Research philosophies and practices).

NOTES

*15% of the annual membership fee may be applied toward travel expenses for state team participation in the annual MBA Leadership Forum.

^In addition to travel reimbursement for official Consortium State Liaison (Policy/Governance), discounts apply to teacher(s) or other participant identified by the Liaison.

Annual Maximums:  Travel Reimbursement

Travel reimbursements for specific activities are offered to encourage and support higher levels of engagement in various leadership development events.  Budget constraints require limitations on reimbursements, and careful management of available funds.  Therefore, various maximums and policies for reimbursements are in place to ensure fair and equitable benefits.  These include:

  • Total reimbursement based on available funds in a leadership-development pool equal to 15% of the membership contribution over the past three years, less funds used.  Within the context of member benefits described above, this leadership-development pool may be used at the discretion of the official state liaison for:
    • Leadership Forum
    • Teacher (HS) advisory network travel
    • College faculty advisory network travel

Participation of the official state Consortium Liaison (and, where applicable, a second state representative) is in addition to the fund pool (i.e., travel reimbursement for the official Liaison is not counted against the pool fund).

Unused funds may not be carried forward.  Available funds are calculated each year based on the most current three years, including the current year.

    EXAMPLE:

    • 2016-17 membership fee:  $5,000
    • 2017-18 membership fee:  $5,000
    • 2018-19 (upgraded) membership fee:  $30,000
           TOTAL for 3 years = $40,000
                     15% of total = $6,000 leadership-development pool

IF $2,000 used for 2017 Leadership Forum, $4,000 remains available in the current leadership-development pool for use in current year’s activities.

  • Events for which travel reimbursement is offered may have specific eligibility requirements.  Requirements must be met before reimbursements will be considered.  Examples include:
    • For the MBA Teacher Advisory Network, required level of participation, including surveys and conference calls, and evidence of actual use of MBA Research materials throughout the year.
    • For annual meeting participants, percent of participation in the actual meeting.
    • For second annual meeting participant, specific scope of responsibility.
